The Pursuit Of Happiness

“What makes you happy?” I was asked by a friend this morning. I answered to the best of my belief, but I suppose it still did not encompass everything that meant happiness to me.

Everybody wants to be happy. I think I haven’t met anybody who doesn’t want to. But people look at happiness in different ways. In Wikipedia, happiness is defined as “an emotion associated with feelings ranging from contentment and satisfaction to bliss and intense joy” Happiness is defined in so many ways, religiously, philosophically, psychologically. But what is real and everlasting happiness? Where can we find it and how can we achieve it? In the next few paragraphs, I’ll try to express in my own words what I think is the true source of real and everlasting happiness from various references and arguments. Note that these are my opinions only, although I will be referring to sources written by other authors, some of which you’ll find hard to refute.

“The Room”

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room.

There were no distinguishing features save for the one wall covered with the small index in alphabetical order.

But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings.

I opened it and began flipping through the cards.

I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was.

Back To The Drawing Board

“How I live today will affect all my tomorrows.

I know that turning down the wrong road is part of the journey;

and finding my way back is a challenge.

And I know that if I keep God close to my heart,

home will never be far away.

There will be expectations not met,

promises lost, tears and moments of despair.

But I’ll remember to be grateful for the sunshine

and to find hope in the rainbow.

To laugh from my soul,

and to always hold on to my dreams.”

For me, I guess it’s back to the drawing board. :)

Meeting The Robinsons

All of my regret
Will wash away somehow…
But I cannot forget
The way I feel right now.

It’s funny when grown-ups sometimes need short stories and fairy tales more than kids do.
